This Date in History: Cuba Aided Haitian Terrorist Reply

August 10, 1959: The Cuban Embassy provided asylum to Haitian terrorist Ulrich Joseph following a bombing in the previous month.  Ambassador Antonio Rodriguez Echazabal requested the Haitian government allow safe passage for Joseph’s wife as well.  Appointed in January 1959, Rodriguez was a 20-year resident of Haiti.  He had previously been a coordinator for Castro’s 26th of July Movement in Haiti.  Based on Havana’s support to terrorists and earlier efforts to overthrow the Haitian government, the Cuban Embassy closed on August 29, 1959.
