Today in History: Cuban Intelligence Supported Assassination Attempt by Chilean Terrorists Reply

March 21, 1990: Members of the leftist guerrilla group, the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), acting with the help of Cuban intelligence, attempted to assassinate former junta leader, General Gustavo Leigh Guzman. The FPMR terrorists broke into Leigh’s office and opened fire, hitting him five times. Other than the loss of an eye, Leigh made a complete recovery.

As head of the Chilean Air Force, General Leigh had ordered the bombing of the presidential palace in the September 1973 coup that overthrew socialist President Salvador Allende. He subsequently served as a key figure in the military junta led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet before later breaking with the government.
